The Computer Science and Telecommunications Board, part of the National Academies’ Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences (DEPS), has released a report that suggests information technology has unrealized potential to improve how communities and the nation handle natural disasters and terrorism. The committee that produced the report believes that investments in information technology by federal, state, and local agencies with disaster management responsibilities would improve the exchange of critical information, support better decision making, increase the flexibility of these organizations, and better engage the public in disaster response and recovery. DEPS, like TRB, is a division of the National Academies, which include the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council.
